Sports Related Concussion
Published in Paperback by Quality Medical (January, 1999)
Authors: Julian E. Bailes, Mark R. Lovell, and Joseph C. Maroon
Average review score:

A must for athletes, trainers, coaches and team physicians.
The authors are clearly THE experts in the field of Sports Related Concussion. They share their experience in high school and college athletics as well as the NFL and NHL. The research that is quoted is very revealing. They claim most leg and knee injuries are examined by physicians, but most brain injuries are not! That's a scary thought!

I was especially impressed with the comments from professional athletes who have suffered numerous concussions before gaining an understanding of the health implications. Their stories should be read by every coach and trainer!

Apollo 13
Published in Paperback by Ediciones B, S.A. (2001)
Authors: Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger
Average review score:

This is a really great book
Apollo 13 was a really well written book that tells all about not only the voyage of Apollo 13, but of the space program from begining to the end of the Apollo era. It covers the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs extremely well, and captures the suspense and action of the Apollo 13 voyage from all angles, whether it was the bleary-eyed crew, crammed inside the lunar module, or Marilyn Lovell facing the very real possibility that her husband may not come home again.

A MUST READ!! TEN STARS!!

Fascinating look at space program
This novel is nearly nothing like the movie. It doesn't capture the suspense as well, which may steer you away from buying this book. Don't. Read it. It is an unforgettably fascinating read, marking the superhuman efforts of humans to bring back some lost friends. It is a warm tale of courageous efforts by the crew of Apollo 13, and of the extraordinary efforts of people on Earth trying to bring them back home. A must read

Much different than other Apollo "tell-all" accounts...
Most of the other first person accounts from ex-astronauts are mearly a re-hashing of their careers, but I think that Jim Lovell must be the one true "story-teller" amoung the former Apollo astronauts. That virtue plus his inclusion of the Misiion Control transcripts from Apollo 13 make this story stand out from the rest (it also doesn't hurt to have an amazing story to tell like the near disaster of Apollo 13!). If you're like me and think that the people in Mission Control and their roles are as important as the astronouts, than you'll love this book. Read this before any of the other astronaut stories and I'll bet that you agree that this is the best one...

Living Naked and Frugal: A Handbook for Parsimonious Nudity
Published in Paperback by Breakout Productions (November, 1997)
Authors: Paul Penhallow and Marilyn Lovell
Average review score:

A Curmudgeon's view of Living Naked
About the book:

He's a curmudgeon and declares himself one in the introduction, even if he doesn't use that term. The writing style is crusty, earthy and very easy to read, even though he has more then a few axes to grind.

With the caution of telling them it is a overview and one man's opinion, I would give this book to someone new to the nudist lifestyle. He does not go into details with many of his comentaries, so I don't really consider it a guidebook or manual. In many ways it really the story of his moving from a city highrise apartment to a trailer in a quiet resort.

4 out 5 stars for the lack of detail.

About the writing:

It would be possible to critically rake this book over the coals for much of its style and flow, but as it was written in the brief time Mr. Penhallow had left in his life, many of its sins can be forgiven. However, I do wish that Ms. Lovell had exercised her editorial/rewrite control as there are several dangling references and repeated comentaries that needed to be completed or removed.

Also don't let the title fool you, anyone who has trailers at 2 different resorts, a 5-ton truck to move the "essentials" between the 2 and 4 microwaves, cannot be called parsimonious and barely be called frugal. ;)

best book
This book in my opinion is the best book on introducing people to nudism. The author used a straight forward approach to all aspects of clothing optional recreation. The author, who is on the cover, passed away as the book went to press but contributor Marilyn Lovell works and plays a big role at the clothing optional resort Avalon in Paw Paw, West Virginia.

Awesome
This book is great. Since I have gotten it I threw away all of my drawers and trousers. I am nude all of the time. I really like to sit on my head like the guy on the cover. I do it alot. And then it hurts. I have to ice my head down after. When I do it, somethimes people walk by and go "wooooah". It is pretty awesome. Then they sometimes say things like "we should do that". When I am standing on my head I also like to pretend that I am a space-man with upside-down eyes.

Introduction to Polymers
Published in Hardcover by Stanley Thornes Pub Ltd (June, 1991)
Authors: R.J. Young and P.A. Lovell
Average review score:

Interesting Basic Mechanical properties
This is an interesting introducing to basic properties on polymers. Specialy chapter five, wich talks about mechanical properties. I would recommend this book as a guide text for an introductory course to polymers, specily on mechanical properties. The mathematical treatment is just enough, without unnecesary ecuations but clear and simple.

Best place to start for polymers
An excellent and a must read for anyone with an interest in polymeric materials. It easily is the best introductory book on the subject and I'd recommend it to all students - believe it - i've been taught by the authors! I only wish they'd also write on more specialized topics in Polymer Science.

THE introductory text for polymers
This is a lovely introductory text for polymer science, hitting on all the major concepts of characterization, structure, mechanical properties, and synthesis. Topics are covered very concisely, but with sufficient detail to be useful in several different graduate level courses on polymers. Great background for understanding Flory-Huggins theory, chain dimensions. And an excellent price as well! Just my opinions as a grad student in some polymers courses...

The Star: A Story to Help Young Children Understand Foster Care
Published in Paperback by Lovell, (10 November, 1999)
Authors: Cynthia Miller Lovell and Angie J. Przystas
Average review score:

The Star
My husband and I are foster parents. Inspiration from this book prompted me to decorate the bed room, where our foster child sleeps, with stars. It turned out really cute. It is very easy for these children to "give up hope", but if we continue to remind them of their inner strength, and that there IS hope for their future, remarkable things can happen. Sometimes all they need is for someone to believe in them.

A comforting story for foster children
We received this book yesterday and I read it to my two foster sons (aged 7 and 8) at bedtime. The asked me to read eat over again until I got too tired! It follows a girl named Kit from when the social workers arrive at her mother's house to pick her up, to feeling more settled in her foster home. My sons felt less alone in their experience when the story explained that there are other children feeling the same things (sometimes happy, angry, confused, sad). It ends on a positive and personal note that they will be okay. I did think it odd that a star speaks to and comforts the child, but one of my sons said he especially liked hearing about the star. One caution: they were not familiar with the name "Kit" and thought she was being called "Kid." I recommend this book.

The Star: Sensitive and Encouraging
The Star: A Story to Help Young Children Understand Foster Care, by Cynthia Miller Lovell, is a refreshingly sensitive book that affirms and encourages children who have been taken from their homes and placed in foster care. The author addresses feelings and questions that children typically have and supportively lets them know that they are not alone. Examples of some issues that are broached include the following: "What does being a foster child mean?", "Am I a foster child because I did something bad?", "Can I eat an apple from the table?" These simple questions are emotionally charged and are of utmost importance to children who ask them. This easy to read book with beautiful watercolor illustrations of children from various cultures and socio-economic groups, is a non-threatening medium to address this sensitive topic with foster children. It indirectly inspires hope, comforts, and affirms each child's uniqueness. The handbook that can be purchased in addition to the book, is a must for adults who wish to indirectly ease children's transition into foster care. This user friendly book provides questions about the main character of The Star and fun activities for the children who read this book. By engaging in these short activities, caregivers can help nurture the bond between themselves and the children whom they help. Because they can also gain insight into the foster child's psyche, they have more tools to effectively help each unique child. In addition to helping foster children and foster parents, The Star can be useful in building sensitivity of this issue and eroding at the stigma of foster care, for peers, educators, social workers, nurses, churches, communities and occupational therapists. As a professional advocate of children in urban and rural areas, this is the only children's book that I have seen available for foster children. It is a must for school and private libraries.

Too Beautiful to Die
Published in Hardcover by Putnam Pub Group (10 July, 2003)
Author: Glenville Lovell
Average review score:

Raw and Literary
Being a fan of Whodunnits, I was impressed by Glenville Lovell's first foray into this genre, by his ability to render everyday characters of color! in extraordinary situations. It's raw fun, mixed with literary concerns such as race, urban life, and love gained, searching for, and lost. Read the book in one setting, not because it was an easy read, but because I was gripped by the atmospheric writing, the engaging and colorful characters, and a plot that had more twists and turns than a country road in a dense forest. Pure enjoyment! (I just might read it again). I'd encourage anyone to give Blades Overstreet a chance--and hope he comes back strong in subsequent books, SOON!

Something New
Glenville Lovell is an amazing author. A fast paced book. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. A mystery book that finally holds your attention. It's refreshing to see something other than the norm. A captivating tale of losing love and regaining love. This book is truly for a trill seeker. A new twist around every corner. Blades Overstreet is a force to be reckoned with. We certainly are looking to many more books from this author. TRULY AMAZING!!!!

Best book of the century!!
Too Beautiful to Die is the best mystery I have read in years. I could not put the book down until I finished it. The book kept me guessing until the end. The book is so action packed and the characters so life like. I cannot say enough great things about this book. I hope Blades Overstreet comes back in another action packed mystery very soon.

Classic Chinese Furniture: Ming and Early Qing Dynasties
Published in Hardcover by China Books & Periodicals (December, 1986)
Authors: Hin-Cheung Lovell, Susan E. Leiper, and Shih-Hsiang Wang
Average review score:

Good Buy For The Money
Classic Chinese Furniture has wonderful illustrations and goes into introductions of the furniture any layman can understand. Mr. Wang has given many details to the reader so that a better understanding, what to look for and and how to judge the quality of a piece can be learned. Pen drawings of the pieces help to illustrate the different parts and clearly show the reader how the piece is put together. I travel to China often and purchased this book in Shanghai. It was more expensive in the bookstore in China than what Amazon charges...

A must for collectors
If you truly appreciate antique Chinese furniture for its grace and beauty, but like me, you can't afford a zitan Southern official chair or huanghuali opium day bed, Wang Shixiang's book, with loads of gorgeous photographs, is the next best thing to owning the actual pieces. More a coffee table book, than a reference book for antique buyers. Still, it's one of the best books around on Chinese antique furniture.

Gorgeous Book
Truly beautiful coffee table book, with plenty of photos of Chinese furniture. A must-have for anyone who loves Chinese furniture. A bargain at the [low] price!

The Good Skin Doctor: A Dermatologist's Survival Guide to Beating Acne
Published in Paperback by Thorsons Pub (September, 1999)
Authors: Tony C. Chu and Anne Lovell
Average review score:

British book
This book is by a British dermatologist. Much of the information about drugs and hormones included British brand names, no US brand names. Still, the information about causes and effects is wonderful and easily understood. And the doctor is not afraid to call a zit a zit!

Great at telling me how acne occurs but is not a must buy
This book is a great tool in telling you about acne and some of the myths around it, but it's not a must buy for acne sufferers. What this book did tell me was that acne was not something I had to live with. It can be stopped through medication, and this book was the final kick in the direction of seeing a dermatologist. For those of you who already know how it occurs, and a lot of the myths around acne, you may not need this but I would still recommend--there will be something in here you did not know before. For those of you who don't know much about acne I would definitely advise you to buy it.

The best thing that I got out of the book was pretty simple. Acne isn't neccesarily something you grow out of. Some people have it throughout there lives. There is no use in simply suffering through it thinking it it will eventually go away. Doing that risks permanent scarring of your face which may never go away. Treat it before the scarring becomes bad. This book pushed to see a dermatologist and get prescriptions for acne medication.

So in closing this book doesn't have the secrets to curing your acne(and it doesn't pretend it does) but the information in it is the best compilation of information on acne, it's causes, and it's treatments, that I know of. This review comes from a moderate acne sufferer who has had acne for the past 5 years.

Highly recommend it!
I am a licensed esthetician, and I love this book! It's small but packed with information on acne causes and treatments. I recommend it to clients, friends, other estheticians. This book has helped me many a time in my practice, as it gives me simple ways to explain things to my clients. Excellent (and not often heard) infomation on scarring and treatment modalities available for different types of scars. Written in an compassionate, straightforward manner... the way you would wish your doctor to talk to you!

Engineering Aspects of Soil Erosion, Dispersive Clays and Loess (Geotechnical Special Publication No 10)
Published in Paperback by American Society of Civil Engineers (April, 1987)
Authors: C.W. Lovell and Richard L. Wiltshire
Average review score:

The only book i can find when i wrote "dispersive, clays"
The book is mainly related with two types of erosion, surface and subsurface ( piping ). Includes papers dealing with both laboratory studies and case studies. Remedial measures introduced. If you are interested with dispersive clays and special examples of case studies, then have it. 3 of 10 papers are related with loessial soils.

THE book on dispersive clays
This book is the Bible on dispersive clays, particularly on engineering aspects. Little had been accomplished before the book was put together, little since. It remains the best reference in the field.

Royal Russia: From the James Blair Lovell Archive
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (January, 1998)
Authors: Carol Townend and James Blair Lovell
Average review score:

Not really worth buying
Hmmmm, I was decidedly disappointed in this book. Many of the pictures contained within were very poor quality and there were some blatant mistakes in identification of the family members. A good many of the photographs are not new to the collector of Romanov books. I would not recommend this book if one is expecting to see anything new. I dont think Mr. Blair Lovell would have been pleased!

A nice collection of fresh photographs...
Though a few caption dates are off, this book is worth having for the photographs alone! The pictures aren't readily found in most other available sources, and are very nicely-presented in their entirety (no artful layering and cropping to obscure the subject matter!). I'm especially stoked that the collection draws largely from one of HIH Maria Nicolaievna's albums...poor Mashka often gets short-shrifted in the mix, and so it's nice to find a cache of photos that represent her point-of-view/feature her.

Good book, but not great
The photographs are beautiful. There are fewer of them than in most other Romanov photo collections, but then, I haven't seen most of them elsewhere, either. One quibble is that several of the photographs seem to be mistakenly identified-- which daughter is which, and so forth. Slightly annoying. The book could also have done with more accompanying text and descriptions. Most pages contain just one or two photographs with brief captions.
